Summary of Research Program

1. Novel autoantibodies and mechanisms of their generation: We are interested in identifying autoantibodies that enhance diagnostic approaches to rheumatic diseases, and in understanding the mechanisms responsible for their generation.
2. Mechanisms of female sex bias in SLE and Sjogren’s: We are studying the role of the female-specific long-noncoding RNA XIST in the pathogenesis of SLE and Sjogren’s syndrome – two of the most female-biased autoimmune diseases.
3. Organization of the cytosolic DNA sensing system: The cell-intrinsic response to cytosolic DNA appears to involve many individual sensors that bind the same ligand, leading to interferon activation. We are interested in understanding the specific roles that each of these sensors play, and the hierarchical organization of the response as a system.
